Complete Switch Emulation Setup on Retroid Pocket 6
The Retroid Pocket 6 is one of the most capable Android handhelds for Switch emulation, but setting it up correctly takes some know-how. This guide walks you through every step from unboxing to playing your first Switch game.
What You Need Before Starting
- Your Nintendo Switch console (to legally dump firmware and keys)
- A microSD card (512GB Samsung Pro Plus recommended)
- A Windows PC (for the key-dumping process)
- Your game cartridges or digitally purchased titles
- A USB-C cable and Wi-Fi connection
This guide covers 100% legal emulation. Downloading firmware, keys, or game ROMs from the internet is illegal. Always use files dumped from your own hardware.
Step 1: Initial Setup of the Retroid Pocket 6
Power on the RP6 and complete the standard Android setup. Connect to your home Wi-Fi. Install any pending system updates via Retroid system settings. First-boot updates often fix early stability bugs.
Step 2: Format and Insert Your MicroSD
Format your microSD card as exFAT using your PC. Insert it into the RP6’s card slot (top edge). Verify under Settings > Storage.
Step 3: Dump Keys from Your Nintendo Switch
You’ll need the Lockpick_RCM homebrew tool to dump your Switch’s encryption keys. This requires your Switch to have custom firmware installed. The process involves booting your Switch into RCM mode and running Lockpick_RCM, which exports prod.keys and title.keys to your Switch’s SD card. Transfer the keys to your RP6 into /switch/keys/ on your microSD.
Step 4: Dump Switch Firmware
Using TegraExplorer on your CFW Switch, dump the system firmware as a ZIP file. Copy this to your RP6. Current recommended firmware: 20.0.1.
Step 5-6: Install and Configure Eden
Install Eden via the Retroid launcher’s emulator section. In Eden, go to Settings > System > Install Firmware and import your firmware ZIP. Then go to Settings > Keys and import your prod.keys and title.keys.
Graphics settings to use: GPU API: Vulkan, Resolution: 1x (720p) to start, ASTC Recompression: Enabled, Async Shader Building: Enabled, GPU Accuracy: Normal.
Step 7: Dump Your Game Cartridges
On your Switch with CFW installed, use NXDumpTool to create NSP or XCI backups of your cartridges. This is the legal method — making a personal backup of software you own. Transfer game files to /games/switch/ on your RP6’s microSD, then add the folder in Eden under Games > Add Game Folder.
Step 8: First Launch
Launch a game. Expect significant stuttering for the first 5-20 minutes as Eden compiles shaders. This is completely normal. For demanding titles like TotK, let it run in a low-stakes area during the initial shader build.
