Anbernic RG406V: Quick Verdict
The Anbernic RG406V offers genuinely impressive Switch emulation performance for its $165-$229 price tag. Powered by the Unisoc T820 chip and featuring one of the best screens Anbernic has ever shipped, it handles the majority of the Switch library well. If budget is your primary constraint, this is the handheld to buy.
Design and Ergonomics
The RG406V adopts a vertical form factor — more like a traditional Game Boy than a horizontal game controller. Build quality is solid for the price tier. The D-pad in particular is exceptional — satisfying for both 2D platformers and menu navigation in RPGs. Hall-effect analog sticks are included, which is notable at this price point. No drift concerns over the long term.
Display: Anbernic’s Best Screen to Date
The 4-inch 960×720 IPS display has earned widespread praise — possibly the best screen Anbernic has ever put in a handheld. The 4:3 aspect ratio is perfectly suited for retro console emulation and works surprisingly well for Switch games, which target 720p internally in handheld mode. Color accuracy and brightness are both strong.
Performance: Unisoc T820 Switch Emulation Tests
The Unisoc T820 is a 6nm chip with Cortex-A76 cores. Results on Eden v19.0.1:
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: Locked 60fps. Excellent.
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons: 55-60fps. Minor drops during weather effects.
- Hollow Knight: Locked 60fps. Perfect.
- Zelda: Breath of the Wild: 20-30fps in open areas, 30fps in shrines. Playable with patience.
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: 15-25fps. Too demanding for this hardware.
The RG406V handles 80-85% of the Switch’s pre-2023 catalog well. Demanding open-world titles from 2022-2024 are where the T820 shows its limitations.
Who Should Buy the Anbernic RG406V?
Buy it if: Budget is your primary constraint, you primarily play pre-2023 Switch titles, or you love the vertical GBA-style form factor.
